Lorne P-12 College’s new STEAM Centre is set within the steep coastal landscape of Lorne, with the building carefully positioned to respond to the site and its surrounding environment. The external material palette draws on the muted tones of the Surf Coast, allowing the building to sit comfortably within its landscape setting.
Internally, the colour and material palette takes inspiration from the surrounding gum trees and coastal environment, with natural greens and greys complemented by subtle blue tones. These references create a calm and cohesive learning environment while reinforcing the building’s connection to place. The centre brings together Food Technology, industry-focused learning and broader STEAM activities within a series of flexible and adaptable teaching spaces. Purpose-built facilities support practical learning, while connected spaces accommodate a range of collaborative, theory-based and project-focused activities.
Strong visual connections between learning areas improve supervision and encourage interaction across the centre, while the adaptable planning allows spaces to respond to different class sizes, teaching approaches and evolving curriculum needs. The result is an integrated learning environment that supports a diverse range of learning styles and provides a valuable resource for the wider school community.
